GHAZIABAD: A 28-year-old man was arrested for allegedly trying to set on fire a 22-year-old woman who had spurned him.The woman was on her way to work at a garment manufacturing unit in Tronica City on Monday when the accused, Jahid, intercepted her and professed his love for her. When she refused to talk to him, the man allegedly snatched and broke her mobile phone and poured petrol on the woman.Jahid, the woman claimed in the police complaint, wanted to coax acceptance out of her. After dousing her in petrol he threatened to set her ablaze, all in the middle of the road, if she did not say yes to him, the complaint said.The woman was saved after some passersby intervened. But Jahid fled from the spot, a police officer said.ACP Loni Rajneesh Upadhayay said on the basis of the womans complaint, an FIR was registered against Jahid under IPC Sections 354 (molestation), 307 (attempt to murder) and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of Rs 50).When cops went looking for Jahid in his Tronica City house, he tried to flee. He sustained some injuries in a minor scuffle that followed. After his arrest, Jahid was admitted to hospital for medical treatment, and on Tuesday, he was sent to judicial custody by a local court, the ACP said, adding that Jahid told his interrogators that he was acquainted with the woman but had not tried to set fire on her.Jahid has claimed that he did not pour petrol on the woman. Cops are still trying to ascertain how the crime unfolded on Monday. A few locals, whom our teams spoke to, have not mentioned anything about petrol.
