Seven kidnap bizman, extort Rs 2.5cr; nabbed

GHAZIABAD: Seven people, including a woman, were arrested on Friday for allegedly kidnapping a Delhi-based businessman last week and extorting money from him. Police have recovered Rs 2.25 crore and a Scorpio.On October 15, the Nandgram police received information about the kidnapping of Shashank Singh, a resident of Janakpuri who runs a cloth factory in Saharanpur. A team of police and SWAT was deployed to identify and track the accused, and they were nabbed based on a tip-off.They have been identified as Shilpa Tyagi, Harshit Kumar, Kartik, Pradeep Singh, Pitambar Das, and Nishant Tyagi from Delhi and Nimish from Ghaziabad. Their leader, Ishant Tyagi, is in police custody in Dehradun in a previous case involving a non-bailable warrant, said DCP Nipun Agarwal.Ishant is Shilpas husband. He was an acquaintance of Shashank and knew that he dealt with large amounts of cash. He hatched a plan to extort some money from him. On the night of October 14, he called Shashank to a mutual friends house in Jyoti Super Village, added Agarwal.Once he arrived, the seven people allegedly tied him up and threatened him to pay Rs 6 crore. He called his associates and was able to arrange only Rs 2.75 crore, but was made to sign a document saying he would pay them Rs 25 lakh on a regular basis.To avoid suspicion, Ishant surrendered himself in Dehradun in relation to a previous case.
