Fogging & anti-larvae spraying continues as dengue cases rise

GHAZIABAD: Fogging and anti-larvae spraying continues at Bhanera as more people are getting tested for dengue. A day earlier, the health department tested over 100 people suffering with fever and initiated a probe in four dengue suspected deaths in Bhanera Village of Modinagar. The dengue cases in Ghaziabad have reached 972, while GB Nagar added 18 new cases on Wednesday, taking the tally to 924. Even as the health department continues to camp at Bhanera, they have tested 1,500 people for dengue of which 55 have tested positive in the last two months, the officials said. All the patients received treatment at the Muradnagar CHC.The health department in both the districts deployed teams to check mosquito prevention arrangements in various rural and urban areas. Along with the district malaria teams, ASHA workers have also been involved to check on symptomatic patients and prevention measures being taken by people in rural parts of both GB Nagar and Ghaziabad."On Monday, 59 malaria teams visited 55 localities in rural as well as urban areas in the district and issued notices wherever larvae are found. During the drive, 2,245 houses were inspected and anti-larvae medicines were sprayed at 46 locations, said Dr RK Gupta, district surveillance officer.Officials said that the district malaria teams are scanning all areas to check for the presence of mosquito larvae. If found, anti-larvae solution is being sprayed in such areas and near houses of dengue-positive patients.The season before winter sets in is favourable time for adeno mosquitoes to breed and bite humans spreading the dengue virus, officials added. These deaths will be analyzed in a district-level review meeting and then sent for a state-level review.Why dengue killed more young people in Bengal recentlyA majority of the recent dengue deaths in Bengal were patients under the age of 50, with only five being senior citizens. Experts believe that one reason for this trend could be the casual approach younger patients have towards the disease. However, immunological and genetic factors may also play a role. Data shows that most of the casualties were between 20 and 50 years old, with children making up the second-largest group. Further investigation is needed to understand the higher proportion of younger people dying from dengue.Dengue cases spiral, reach 583 so far in ongoing seasonThe number of dengue cases in Ludhiana, India has more than doubled in a month, reaching a total of 583 cases by October 23. Of these cases, 67.7% are from Ludhiana city. The highest number of cases in rural areas is in Koom Kalan block with 35 cases. Health authorities have advised precautions and early diagnosis, but have stated that most patients are recovering as the disease does not seem to be severe.
