GHAZIABAD: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) held a high-level meeting in Delhi to review several ongoing projects, including the revamp of GT Road and Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, on Thursday. The meeting was convened by NHAI chairperson Santosh Yadav and attended by the district magistrates of Ghaziabad, Noida and Meerut. The GT Road redevelopment project, NHAI said at the meeting, is expected to start next year. NHAI informed the DMs that the project has been referred to the authoritys internal appraisal committee, which also includes members from Niti Ayog. Work on the stretch is expected to start in January, an official from the highways authority said.According to the detailed project report (DPR), three elevated stretches will be developed to decongest and streamline traffic on the critical 14km road, one of the most congested stretches linking Ghaziabad to Delhi, at a cost of Rs 627 crore. The project has been divided into two phases — a portal pier over the Thakurdwara flyover, and a 50m flyover from New Bus Adda to Meerut Road trisection. The revamp was delayed as the civic authorities and the NHAI could not reach a consensus over the Thakurdwara flyover. Constructed nearly two decades ago, the flyover has somewhat become a liability today as a two-lane structure occupies a lot of space and the road beneath it is crammed partly due to paucity of land and partly because of encroachment. While dismantling the flyover was initially proposed, NHAI later incorporated a plan to build an elevated corridor above it by placing steel piers at a cost of Rs 595 crore.Meanwhile, work on the 212km Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is also going on, NHAI said. The stretch from Delhis Akshardham to Baghpat via Loni is likely to be ready in the next four months. The NHAI has informed us that the 31km stretch from Akshardham to Kekhra in Baghpat passing UP Gate near Loni will be ready by March 2024. More than 60% of the work is complete, Ghaziabad district magistrate RK Singh said.Work on the entire expressway is under way and the 31km stretch is being taken up in two packages — Akshardham-Loni (15km) and Loni-Khekra near Eastern Peripheral Expressway (16km), a senior NHAI official said. The estimated cost of the Akshardham-Loni stretch is Rs 1,300 crore, while the Loni-Baghpat corridor is likely to cost NHAI Rs 1,900 crore. Although these vehicles are already prohibited on the EPE, lack of enforcement allows them to continue using the expressway. The NHAI has urged the authorities to take action and deploy teams at the entry points to ensure compliance. Slow vehicles, including bikes, are also banned on the Noida and Yamuna expressways.Last safety study on FOBs in 2018, NHAI starts fixing E Delhi structureThe National Highways Authority of India has started replacing the steel girder of the foot overbridge in Lalita Park, Delhi, which partially collapsed on Monday. It has been revealed that the governments last study on the safety and condition of foot overbridges (FOBs) was conducted in 2018.
