GHAZIABAD: An analysis of particulate matter concentrations at the four air quality monitoring stations in Ghaziabad last month shows that Loni has the highest PM2.5 levels, followed by Vasundhara, Sanjay Nagar and Indirapuram. The Loni station, which covers Tronica City, Roop Nagar Industrial area and Arya Nagar areas that are home to scores of industrial units and see high vehicular movement, recorded an average concentration of fine particulate matter last month at 287.9 micrograms per cubic metre. Vasundhara, located very close to the Sahibabad industrial area, saw an average PM2.5 level of 136.7 µg/m³, Sanjay Nagar 135.3 µg/m³ and Indirapuram 95 µg/m³. The national ambient air quality standard for PM10 and PM2.5 is 100 and 60 micrograms per cubic metre, respectively.A visit to Loni on Friday showed there was no water sprinkling or sweeping of roads, and construction materials lay uncovered. A thick layer of dust covered the central verge of the main road even as vehicles were seen violating PUC norms. The monitoring station recorded an average PM2.5 of 466 on the day while PM10 was 408.Track the pollution level in your cityIn Indirapuram, potholed roads have been kicking up dust. Sand and other construction materials were seen lying uncovered near the Windsor Market. In Vaibhav Khand, locals said there has been no mechanical sweeping of roads since Thursday.Unpicked garbage and uncovered construction and demolition waste, meanwhile, were the major contributors to Vasundhara and Sanjay Nagars average PM 2.5 concentration. UB Garg, a resident of Vasundhara, said polluting units in the nearby Sahibabad industrial area left the air toxic. The air quality has deteriorated over October. Many people have started complaining about sore throat due to pollution, he said.District magistrate RK Singh told TOI the administration was taking initiatives to check Lonis pollution. We have directed the municipality to start water sprinkling on dust-prone hotspots during the night, he said.We also published the following articles recentlyMumbai Air Pollution: Soon, dust monitoring and mitigation systems at JVLR jnThe BMC in Mumbai will deploy outdoor dust mitigation units (ODMU) and a dust monitoring system (DMS) at the JVLR junction to address pollution-related complaints. The decision was made after requests were made to include Jogeshwari, which has poor air quality due to various projects, in the list of locations for the units. The ODMU will have filters to remove pollutants and harmful gases, and the DMS will activate the ODMU when the air quality index changes. The initiative will cost around Rs 65 lakh.Dust pollution: MCD to fix internal roadsThe Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) plans to buy machines to fix potholes and repair internal roads in order to mitigate dust and pollution. The project is expected to cost over Rs 9 crore. The material required for road repairs is currently unavailable due to the closure of hot-mix plants. The machines will be funded by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, and the Delhi governments environment department. Additionally, MCD approved the operation and maintenance of 24 mechanical road sweepers for two years to control air pollution.Mumbai pollution: Green fuel use rises in road transport, preventing further drop in air qualityAir pollution in Mumbai has worsened due to higher concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 from sources like construction sites, waste burning, and traffic congestion. However, the city has made progress in controlling other pollutants like nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide, thanks to the adoption of CNG and electric vehicles. CNG and electric car registrations have surpassed diesel car purchases, indicating growing acceptance of eco-friendly vehicles. Public transport, including buses and auto-rickshaws, is also transitioning to clean fuels. The challenge now is to control domestic burning and road dust to further reduce pollution levels.
