Delhi Police SI on way home hits bike into divider, dies

GHAZIABAD: A 57-year-old Delhi Police sub-inspector died after the bike he was riding crashed into a divider in Raj Nagar Extension on Friday night.Ashok Kumar, a resident of Shahdara in Delhi, was returning home from a wedding in Ghaziabad when the accident occurred around 10.30pm. The impact of the crash was such that his helmet broke into two. Ramanand Kushwaha, additional DCP (traffic), said a passerby called up police around 11pm.A police team was rushed to the spot and Kumar was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival."He had come to attend a wedding in Ghaziabad and was on his way towards the Rotary roundabout when the accident occurred. He was returning home. The impact of the accident suggests he was speeding. His helmet was mangled," Kushwaha said.Kumar suffered grievous injuries to the head and shoulders. "His body was sent for an autopsy. The reports are awaited," the ADCP said.In another accident, a 35-year-old biker died after being hit by an unknown vehicle that was trying to overtake him on the Hapur-Modinagar road.The man was identified as Robin Rana, a resident of Modinagar. Rana worked in a private company as an accountant, police said.According to Kushwaha, police received a call around 9.30pm on Friday that a biker was lying on the road with grievous injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died during treatment."Initial investigation revealed he was headed for Hapur on his bike, but did not have a helmet on. The vehicle tried to overtake him and crashed into the bike. The driver did not stop," he said.On the basis of a complaint by Ranas family, an FIR was registered at Bhojpur police station against unknown persons under sections 279 (rash driving) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC. "Police are checking CCTV footage of nearby areas so that the vehicle can be traced," Kushwaha said.
