Condos with no STPs? Mayor warns of fines

Ghaziabad: Despite notices, several townships in Ghaziabad still do not have waste processing plants that are mandatory under Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2016. Mayor Sunita Dayal on Tuesday warned that if societies are found without the waste processing plants during civic inspections, hefty fines will be imposed on them.We will be conducting surprise inspections in these societies to check where the builders and AOA are dumping the garbage.If they are found without a processing plant for segregation of wet and dry garbage, we will issue notice and impose a fine of up to Rs 1 lakh, said mayor Dayal.The SWM Rules make it compulsory for all residential societies, hotels, buildings, restaurants, and even shops, which generate more than 100 kg worth of civic waste per day, to set up processing plants to segregate wet and dry garbage of their own.Government offices, and facilities like the IAF, railway stations, and several integrated townships generate nearly 150- 200 metric tonnes of waste daily. Meanwhile, the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) conducted a survey in September, which revealed that 29 housing societies within Crossings Republik collectively generate, approximately 25,000 kg of solid waste every day, and none of these housing societies have set up waste processing plants.We also published the following articles recentlyKey meet to secure green nod for new waste plant on Nov 24Chandigarhs municipal corporation (MC) and National Environmental Engineering Research (NEERI) officials will meet with the ministry of environment and forests to seek approval for an integrated solid waste processing plant in Dadumajra. The Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) will determine the terms of reference for the projects environmental clearance. NEERI has conducted various studies for the project and will submit reports to the ministry. The project falls under the yellow category, requiring clearance from the Centre due to its proximity to another states border. A public hearing will be held by the deputy commissioner as part of the clearance process. The plant aims to process the citys solid waste for 15 years.Construction waste dumps a call to disasterIn the heart of the Char Dham road widening project, the residents of Manjh Gaon and Vaana Gaon are grappling with the dumping of construction waste from the Silkyara tunnels. The waste poses a threat to local streams, rivers, and nearby communities, with concerns of floods and flash floods. The waste disposal sites lack protective walls or mechanisms to prevent contamination. Villagers allege that the waste quantity has exceeded approved limits. Despite penalties and claims of adherence to procedures, urgent attention is needed to address this issue and rescue trapped workers.SC stays NGTs 12,000 crore waste disposal lapse fine on MaharashtraThe Supreme Court stays a National Green Tribunal order that directed the Maharashtra government to deposit Rs 12,000 crore for failing to treat solid and liquid waste generated in the state. The court decision comes after senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing the Maharashtra government, argued that the imposition of a massive cost hinders the states efforts in waste management. The Supreme Court had previously monitored a Rs 26,000 crore STP project for Mumbai. The NGTs order is now stayed, and the Maharashtra government is not required to pay the compensation within two months.
