Groom down with dengue on wedding day, nuptials in hospital

GHAZIABAD: There was no way doctors would let a 27-year-old East Delhi resident suffering from dengue and with a low platelet count go. But it was his wedding on Monday and the occasion demanded a solution. So, a meeting hall of the hospital – Max Vaishali – was turned into a wedding venue where the groom and bride exchanged vows and garlands. Just four days before his wedding, Avinash Kumar fell ill — he had a fever and felt exhausted for the next two days.On November 25, he landed in the high-dependency unit of Max Vaishali after he was diagnosed with dengue. His blood platelet count, doctors said, had dipped to just 10,000. A patient is considered to be at high risk if the platelet count is less than 20,000.As Avinashs fever showed no signs of abating, his father Rajesh Kumar wanted to postpone the wedding for a few days. The next day, Avinashs fiancée Anuradha and her family members dropped by to visit him at the hospital and it struck them that the couple could get married at a brief ceremony at the same mahurat (auspicious time) on Monday. The elaborate wedding that was planned at a banquet hall in Palwal was discarded for a minimalist one -- as much as the new venue would permit -- after the hospital administration agreed to the strange request to allow the vows to be taken there. On November 27 evening, Avinash dressed up in his sherwani and Anuradha in her bridal lehenga and got married in the presence of just 10 family members. I never thought that my baraat would not come and instead I will go to a hospital with my family to get married, Anuradha, who is a nurse at a Faridabad hospital, said.Dr Ruchi Ranawat, medical superintendent of Max Vaishali, said, The ceremony took place in the meeting room, adhering to all necessary health and safety protocols in the presence of medical staff, including doctors and nurses. Currently, Avinash is admitted at the internal medicine department and is responding well. His platelet count is currently over 40,000, the hospital said.We were worried when my son fell ill and was admitted to the high-dependency unit of the hospital. We were also tense as the brides family had made arrangements and guests were already invited. However, the hospital accepted our request. Once Avinash is fine, we can have a reception party, Rajesh said.
