Ghaziabad: The city logged more crimes against women last year than in 2021, even as total crimes cognisable under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Special and Local Laws (SLL) decreased, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data showed. A total of 1,063 crimes against women were registered last yearcompared to 591 in 2021 — a nearly 80% spike. On the other hand, a total of 13,207 IPC and SLL cases were filed in 2022 compared to 16,495 in 2021.About the numbers, police commissioner Ajay Kumar Mishra said that under the commissionerate system introduced in November last year, efforts such as deploying more women cops at police stations, opening pink booths, conducting awareness drives in schools and speeding up the filing of chargesheets in rape and Pocso cases have been stepped up to encourage more women to come forward with their complaints. According to the NCRB 2021 and 2022 data, rape cases nearly doubled from 32 to 68, as did IPC Section 498A (cruelty by husband or relatives) cases from 297 to 611, contributing to the numbers significantly. Also, dowry deaths sharply rose from 18 to 32, and assaults on women with intent to outrage her modesty from 105 to 130. But, kidnapping and abduction cases aimed at compelling women to marry dipped slightly from 67 to 50. In the same period, crimes against children increased by 39%, from 136 to 189. These include Pocso cases, which rose from 93 to 134. The remaining are kidnapping and abduction cases. Cyber crimes also rose to 626, with 15 of them against women, from 451 in 2021. Cyber crimes against women involve publishing or transmitting sexually explicit materials on social media or other online platforms. Some of the notable cases include the alleged rape of a 24-year-old woman at gunpoint by her cousin in September 2022. The accused was arrested later. In August 2022, a 19-year-old girl was raped at her birthday party and then again in a hotel the next day. Police said the three arrested accused spiked her drink and thrashed her when she tried to resist. In the same month, a 25-year-old man was arrested for allegedly kidnapping two minor girls on the pretext of giving them a cycle ride and raping and killing the nine-year-old on a sugarcane farm while the six-year-old escaped. In December 2022, a nine-year-old Australian boy was raped during a marriage function in a farmhouse in Masuri. His father caught the accused red-handed and handed him over to the police. The police chief said, More women personnel have been deployed at police stations under the commissionerate system. This year, we also opened 20 pink booths and solved over 1,600 complaints lodged by women. Police have also held awareness programmes in schools and colleges to inform women students about good and bad touches, he said. The police commissioner also claimed that while the disposal rate of rape cases was around 65% from 2018 to 2022, it has reached nearly 95% under the commissionerate system. Police are now submitting rape chargesheets in court within twenty days of victims lodging complaints and Pocso chargesheets within 15 days, Mishra said.
