Complete handover of 7 Gzb colonies in 2 months: UP to GDA & civic body

GHAZIABAD: The UP government has asked the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) and the municipal corporation to sort out differences and complete the handover of seven colonies to the civic body in two months. The seven colonies that need to be handed over to the municipal corporation are Indirapuram, Indraprastha, Swarn Jayantipuram, Koyal Enclave, Madhuban Bapudham, Indrakunj and Tulsi Niketan. The order to complete the handover process was issued by Nitin Gokarn, the principal secretary of the housing and urban planning department. The handover of these colonies from the GDA has been in the works for long. Both the development authority and the municipal corporation have conducted their surveys, but they are yet to reach a consensus on the terms and conditions. Now that the state government has given them a deadline, both must sort the issue out at the earliest, a GDA official said. The issue dates back to 2016 – when Indirapuram had only one ward, Makanpur. It was, however, divided into seven wards after a delimitation that year. Despite the division, these wards were never handed over to the corporation. In the absence of handover, the civic body has not released any funds for these wards. Councillors have repeatedly pointed out that development work has been hampered by the lack of funds. When the corporation eventually agreed to take over the townships, it asked the GDA to either complete development work in these areas or pay Rs 365 crore to the civic body to do it on its behalf. After much deliberations, the amount was slashed to Rs 288 crore. The stalemate, however, has been continuing. Look, we are a service provider while GDA is responsible for developing colonies and handing them over to us after ensuring all the basic amenities have been taken care of. In these seven townships, work still needs to be carried out on roads, drains and supply of drinking water. If we take these colonies over in such shape, it will put undue strain on our coffers. As a matter of principle, GDA should either complete the pending work or give us the money required for it. We will do the work on their behalf, a corporation official said. The two agencies, officials said, will conduct meetings soon. We have to reach a consensus now that the government has come up with an order, the corporation official said.
