Manohar Parrikar goes to GMC for lsquoroutine medical checkuprsquo

BJP couldn’t arrive at consensusPANAJI: Chief minister Manohar Parrikar on Sunday went through a routine medical checkup at Goa Medical College GMC ) and hospital.The chief minister’s office said that the check-up was for around one hour. “After the checkup, the CM returned to his private residence at Dona Paula,” the CMO said. But, a consensus could not be arrived at.Later, Shah had tweeted: “After discussion with the Goa Pradesh BJP core committee it has been decided that Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar will continue to lead the Goa government. The state government’s cabinet portfolio reallocation will be carried out at the earliest.”Accordingly, Parrikar dropped two ailing former ministers Francis D’Souza and Pandurang Madkaikar. Since then, he has been undergoing treatment at his private residence.Parrikar had attended the last assembly session in August before flying to the US for a medical follow-up.

This is the first time Parrikar left his residence since his return from New Delhi on October 14.On Saturday, Parrikar chaired the BJP core committee meeting and discussed the political situation in the state.Recently, Parrikar also chaired a cabinet meeting at his private residence and an Investment Promotion Board meeting and cleared various projects.On Friday, Union minister for Ayush, Shripad Naik , said a change of leadership was inevitable “aaj nahi toh kal” (if not today, tomorrow) given that Parrikar is suffering from a prolonged illness.Parrikar was first diagnosed with the pancreatic ailment in mid-February and has undergone treatment in the US. On September 15, he was finally taken to AIIMS and returned to Goa after a month. Since then, he has been undergoing treatment at his private residence.Parrikar had attended the last assembly session in August before flying to the US for a medical follow-up. After returning from the US, he has not attended office.Parrikar’s illness had led to the BJP central leadership sending a team to Goa to explore “alternative options” for a change in guard in the state. But, a consensus could not be arrived at.Later, Shah had tweeted: “After discussion with the Goa Pradesh BJP core committee it has been decided that Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar will continue to lead the Goa government. The state government’s cabinet portfolio reallocation will be carried out at the earliest.”Accordingly, Parrikar dropped two ailing former ministers Francis D’Souza and Pandurang Madkaikar. However, he is yet to allot additional portfolios to the ministers.Parrikar currently holds over 24 portfolios including the key ministries of home, finance, education, industry and mines.
