Tourism department deploys 200 labourers at key beaches

Panaji: Following reports of garbage piling up in many coastal areas, the tourism department has swung into action, deploying around 200 labourers towards beach cleaning along important stretches.“Our first target is to clear the accumulated waste,” said a senior official from the Goa Tourism Development Corporation’s (GTDC) project cell.The labourers engaged on the beaches will thereafter be guided on the task of segregation, the official said. “This will take at least another a day or two for the entire exercise to synchronise and then stabilise,” the official added.In a statement issued on Saturday, the tourism department has said that it has taken full charge of the exercise with effect from Friday through GTDC’s assistance. As a priority, the department is focusing on waste collection, while in the second stage, segregation and disposal is also being worked out.The waste collected from the beaches is proposed to be segregated and thereafter sent to the Saligao waste treatment plant.“Since Friday, as many as 200 labourers have been pressed into beach cleaning work on most of the important beaches in North and South Goa,” the department stated, adding that it is also aiming to deploy labourers on all other beaches in the coming days depending on availability.
