MARGAO: After being on the run for over five months, Shyam Mukund Devidas, accused of killing 55-year-old Succorina Fernandes e Travasso from Bepquegal, Curchorem , was nabbed by the police late Monday night after he was spotted at the Margao railway station by a policeman attached to the local intelligence bureau.Devidas, a resident of Karmane, Dabhal, near Sanvordem , was booked by the Curchorem police on July 6 for murder.DySP Uttam Raut Dessai told reporters that the accused evaded the police by crossing the border and doing odd jobs to sustain himself. “Soon after committing the crime, Devidas boarded a train to Panvel where he stayed for nearly four months. He worked there as a casual labourer and spent the nights there at the railway station. After that he went to Mangaluru but as he couldn’t find any work there he moved to Hassan district and worked as a construction labourer for nearly a month,” Raut Dessai said.Devidas came down to Margao two days ago and was staying at the Margao railway station for the night. Late Monday night, after an alert cop spotted a person at one of the platforms who he felt bore similarity to Devidas, the Curchorem police were contacted. Following sustained interrogation, Devidas admitted to having committed the murder.Raut Dessai said that while the accused says he got angry after the woman refused to pay his wages, police also suspect a sexual angle to the crime. Devidas was engaged to do odd menial jobs like garden cleaning, wood cutting, house painting.“This man has a tendency of sexual activities. Possibly, she tried to resist his advances, which infuriated him; and fearing that she would reveal his deeds, he killed her,” Raut Dessai said.Devidas has been remanded in six-day police custody by the Quepem court.
