GMC’s surgery paper riddled with repeated questions, errors

PANAJI: Pandemonium broke out in the examination hall on Monday during the general surgery-II paper of third year Goa Medical College (GMC) MBBS students. A meeting was called on Wednesday with dean Dr Pradeep Naik, who is the chairperson of conduct of theory examination, and dean faculty medicine Dr R G W Pinto, at Goa University.

PANAJI: Pandemonium broke out in the examination hall on Monday during the general surgery-II paper of third year Goa Medical College (GMC) MBBS students. Not only was a 10-mark question repeated twice, there were other errors in the 60-mark question paper, too. A GMC official said that though there are occasional errors noted in question papers, this particular one had a total of four errors. The official added that he wondered how the errors went unnoticed despite double checking.A question on Meckel’s diverticulum appeared twice in the surgery final examination paper. The official said that for every erroneous question, students are entitled to receive the marks allotted for it.Besides repetition of questions, an abbreviation has also appeared in the paper, which is not allowed, the official said.The usage of abbreviations affects chances of average and borderline students of performing better, the official said.The decision whether students will receive marks for the errors in the surgery paper will be taken by the Goa University, the official added. A meeting was called on Wednesday with dean Dr Pradeep Naik, who is the chairperson of conduct of theory examination, and dean faculty medicine Dr R G W Pinto, at Goa University.
