Panaji: Goa tourism department will decide its course of action in terms of tourism promotion only after the tourism master plan is ready.The newly-appointed tourism director Menino D'Souza said he needs to examine the road map for tourism development drawn in the tourism master plan. "Let me examine the tourism master plan first," said D'Souza, when asked about his plans for the new department. He said the future developments will have to be in lines with what is suggested in the master plan.The master planner, a consortium of KPMG and TL, has submitted four modules of draft tourism master plan to the government.Though the tourism department has improved its functioning in the last three to four years, some of its bigger challenges are yet to be resolved. It started online registration for tourist trades and applications are now processed comparatively faster, yet issuance of licences to beach shacks has to be expedited.Also, tourism department has not been much effective in plugging revenue leakages. All tourists trades have to be registered with tourism department, yet many get away with their illegal business, for want of effective system to keep a tab on them.People in the coastal belt put their houses on rent, earning lakhs of rupees, but few register with the department, a tourism official said.
