Panaji: With the pay parking contract awarded to Straight Deal Services expiring on Sunday, the Corporation of the City of Panaji has urged people not to hand over parking fees to the contractor in the city limits from May 1.The disastrous pay parking contract failed to bring discipline to the state capital's chaotic traffic while also denying the civic body of precious revenue."The public is hereby informed not to pay any parking fees to the persons or agents appointed by Straight Deal services till a fresh contract is executed and the same notified in the newspapers," CCP commissioner Dipak Desai said.Margao-based Straight Deal Services won the contract to implement the pay parking system in Panaji but failed to pay CCP its dues. Two months ago, CCP issued a demand notice to Straight Deal Services seeking recovery of the outstanding dues of Rs 24.75 lakh owed to the civic body as pay parking fees.According to the contract signed between the two parties, Straight Deal Services had to pay monthly charges of Rs 5.25 lakh from May 2016 till April 2017, the tenure of the contract. Based on a representation made by Straight Deal Services, a 50% rebate was given to the contractor from May 2016 to October 2016 and he was asked to pay Rs 2.50 lakh for the six months.The contractor failed to cough up the money and has instead made counter allegations that his earnings were lower than estimated because CCP failed to demarcate the parking areas, allegations that CCP has repeatedly denied."It is revealed from the records that you have failed and neglected to pay the outstanding dues of Rs 24,75,249 plus interest as on date. No relaxation in payment shall be given to you as already 50% rebate has been granted to you from May 2016 to October 2016," Dessai said in the letter addressed to Sham Rajadhyax, partner of Straight Deal Services.
