280 cigarette packs seized at Varca

Margao: The Colva police on Thursday confiscated 280 packets of cigarettes worth nearly Rs 1 lakh that were kept for sale at a shop in Varca, as they didn't carry the statutory pictorial health warning on their labels.The owner of the shop, Solan Furtado, was arrested by the police under relevant sections of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) 2003, and was later released on bail.Under Sec 7 of COTPA Act, labels on cigarette packets should contain specified warnings, including a pictorial depiction of a skull and cross bones.
