Suspected poll freebies worth ₹45 crore seized in state

Indore: The state goods and services tax department has seized suspected election freebies worth Rs 45 crore likely to be distributed by political parties to lure voters in poll-bound Madhya Pradesh since the enforcement of model code of conduct, a top official said on Friday. The department has also caught and cancelled registrations of hundreds of firms involved in dealing and ferrying large volumes of such items without proper invoices and e-way bills. Through raids and vehicle interceptions across different junctions in the state , we have seized goods including sarees, utensils, silver jewellery, mobile phones and liquor that were probably used as freebies in the poll-bound state. These items were transported with fake names and invoices. So far we have made seizures worth Rs 45 crore in the state, said Rajini Singh, additional commissioner, SGST. The SGST department has carried 140 raids after model code of conduct came into force in the state. Assembly elections will be held in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan on November 17 and November 25, respectively.Over 25 cr cash, jewellery seized since poll code came into effectEnforcement agencies in Madhya Pradesh have seized cash, liquor, drugs, jewelry, and other material worth over Rs 200 crore since the model code of conduct came into force on October 9. The joint teams have seized Rs 25 crore cash, 19.5 lakh liters of illegal liquor worth Rs 36.9 crore, narcotic substances worth Rs 11.70 crore, and other items worth Rs 77.3 crore. A total of 3,832 candidates have filed 4,359 nominations for the upcoming assembly elections.Rajnath Singh to campaign in poll-bound Mizoram on WednesdayUnion Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will visit Mizoram to campaign for the upcoming assembly elections. He will address public meetings in Mamit and Siaha, where BJP candidates are contesting. The party is focusing on minority areas and aims to win the votes of linguistic minorities. Prime Minister Narendra Modis planned campaign in Mamit has been cancelled, with no reason given, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah will also not be attending. BJP president JP Nadda has released the partys manifesto, promising various initiatives if elected. The elections will be held on November 7.
