Turnout of voters in Jobat assembly constituency lowest in state

Indore: Despite putting in numerous efforts in Jobat assembly seat to increase the voter participation, the turnout remained lowest in the state. As many locals migrate to bordering states for work, Alirajpur district administration was not able to woo many voters.Of 301391 voters in Jobat assembly constituency, only 54.37% voted on Friday. We were expecting an increase of at least 8000 votes. We were targeting at least 60% voting this election but we could increase 2%. We planned many activities, sent people to nearby states to bring back locals, set up call centres but the turnout did not increase. This is a serious issue and thoughts should be put in to give employment locally, so locals dont migrate, district collector Abhay Bedekar said. While the turnout increased from 52.30% in 2018 to 54.37% in 2023, fewer women voted in the assembly as compared to men. The figures released by the district election office revealed that 56.29% men voted, and 52.49% female came out to vote.Of the 325 polling stations, more than 123 recorded less than 50% voting. There were over five polling stations which recorded less than 20% voting. In Jobat assembly seat, 64554 voters, which is 21.77% of the total 296557 voters, work in nearby states like Gujarat and Rajasthan for better wages. While the turnout on the seat was 52.30% in 2018, it increased only by 2% in this election. The district administration had planned and carried out many SVEEP activities in these villages to ensure maximum turnout.A recent analysis of voter turnout done by election officers in Alirajpur district showed that higher percentage of voting was seen during panchayat and Lok Sabha elections when harvest season and tribal festival Bhagoria coincided with elections, but the voting percentage dropped significantly during the assembly elections in 2018. As the tribals celebrate Diwali in a different manner, by selecting their own dates for the occasion, the officials couldnt woo them to come on a leave during Diwali.Despite writing letters to employers in Gujarat and Rajasthan, asking them to give the migrants a leave to cast their vote, and sending a team of administration to these states to talk to voters employed there, very few people turned up to cast their vote.
