IMC ups the ante to curb dengue, malaria

Indore: A rise in mosquito-borne diseases has prompted Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) to launch a fogging and anti-larva drive across the city.According to IMC commissioner Harshika Singh, the civic bodys health department and malaria team have jointly launched a drive to check mosquito menace. As part of it, fogging and pesticides are being sprayed at the strategic locations, especially the areas facing waterlogging, in all 85 wards of the city.As per the records, an average around 10 cases of dengue are being registered daily in the district while close to 450 people have so far tested positive of the mosquito-borne disease in this season.After the rainy season, the city nullahs, which had overflowed, still have tonnes of garbage, which flowed along, accumulated on its banks that IMC is planning to remove through an intensive drive.There are also some areas where waterlogging is an issue due to digging on roads and ongoing construction works. To this, the commissioner has instructed the agencies concerned to speed up the works.After concluding the polling, IMC is also returning to its routine works including that of maintaining the sanitation in the countrys cleanest city including that cleaning of urinals and toilets along with proper monitoring of the same.A seven-days roster was also prepared to carry out fogging and anti-larva drive in all 85 wards of the city. Mescom is laying underground cables, causing traffic snarls. Kodialguthu road has been dug up again, inconveniencing residents. The MCC council opposition leader insists that contractors work day and night. Urban development minister Byrathi Suresh will address the issue. Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur will monitor the underground cable laying on MG Road. The MCC has started filling potholes and patching roads, and released a helpline for complaints.Greater Noida: Quick response teams at work, but garbage still piling up in most areasResidents in Greater Noida complain about piles of garbage despite the quick response team set up by the authority. The authority is only cleaning certain areas after receiving complaints. Some residents have taken up cleaning themselves or hired laborers, but it has not been enough. The strike by sanitation workers over salary hikes and bonuses is ongoing, with talks scheduled for Friday. Alok Singh of the Active Citizens Group questions why cleaning work in sectors is divided among multiple agencies.
