Indore: The drop in temperature and wedding season have fuelled demand for new season dates in Indore arriving from Iraq, Iran and Saudi Arabia. A spike in demand has kept prices high as compared to the last season.In winters, tonnes of dates from Iraq, Iran and Saudi Arabia come in markets of Indore from the ports of Mumbai and Gujarat. Winters are the peak consumption period for dates and other dry fruits.In Indore, close to 30-40 tonnes of dates arrive in a day and almost 90 per cent gets consumed in the local and nearby markets, said traders from the Siyaganj market.Prices of dates in the local market are in the range of Rs 60 per kg to Rs 800 per kg, while the premium quality is priced above Rs 1000-1200 per kg, trader said. Prateek Tiwari, a dates wholesaler in Siyaganj market said, Demand for dates has jumped suddenly after a drop in temperature. Weddings have also supported the sale of dates in the local market. Siyaganj is one of the oldest kirana markets of Indore housing almost 500 shops, while Malharganj, Malwa Mill and Marothia Bazaar are other kirana wholesale markets of Indore.The peak arrival season of dates kicks off from October and extends until January.Sales of packaged and seedless dates have grown in Indore.
