Indore’s first confectionery cluster eyes ₹200 cr investment

Indore: Indores first confectionery cluster in Rangwasa is expected to attract an investment of around Rs 200 crore from small and medium scale confectionery manufacturers and players from the supply chain.More than ten confectionery units have become operational in the cluster, while supporting units like a food laboratory, corrugated box unit, jar manufacturing industry and lamination unit have also come up in the cluster, creating an ecosystem for the confectionery industry.Over 50 confectionery industries have taken up space in the newly-developed confectionery cluster spread across 28.6 hectare in Rangwasa. Indore Confectionery Manufacturers Association president Dinesh Choudhary said, This is Indores first cluster for confectionery units, where we plan to create a conducive ecosystem for the industry by setting up anchor, small units and players from the supply chain network. This will help in saving on transportation, time and money as everything will be available under the same roof. Close to 10 confectionery units have started construction, while a few others are likely to start units by early next year, said the association.Industry players said, more than 90 per cent units are expected to start operations from the cluster in another 1-1.5 years.Many local confectionery units starting in the cluster have added a new range of products to cater to the growing demand in the international market. Candies and toffees manufactured by homegrown units in Indore have found new markets in the United States and Europe.Indore is a hub for confectionery units engaged in making candies, lollipops, chocolates and other sugary items.Rajesh Kalra, a confectionery manufacturer said, Candies and candy toys market is growing at a good pace and many players like us are tapping into new foreign markets. KERC had initially levied Rs 1.48 paise per unit as ASC, but after hearing petitions, they estimated Rs 1.4 per unit. The commission has decided to levy 70 paise/unit as the ASC for 2023-24, benefiting large and medium industries buying power bypassing Escoms.Commercial units got 90% of tax sopsAhmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has granted a tax exemption to 51,000 unused properties in the city, valued at Rs 5,000 crore, resulting in a tax relief of Rs 87.24 crore over three fiscal years. The vacant properties, primarily commercial, have taken advantage of a 90% tax exemption offered by AMC. The city has seen an average of 15,000 to 20,000 vacant properties each year. AMC is now tightening the rules for tax relief on unused properties to address the revenue loss. Residential properties, however, have not availed of the same tax exemption as commercial properties.Maharashtra: Tata Powers old 500 MW unit at Trombay to continue supplyThe Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) has granted Tata Power a five-year extension for its 930 MW plant at Trombay, allowing for fresh power purchase agreements. This includes Tata Powers 36-year-old 500 MW coal-fired thermal set, which was planned to be phased out. The commission had previously suggested phasing out the Trombay and Adani Electricitys 500 MW plants, but the potential power shortage and impact on Mumbais islanding capability led to the extension. Tata Power will need a capital investment of Rs 900 crore to extend the Trombay project, and the commission has ordered the company to enter into long-term power purchase agreements for its hydroelectric plants at Bhira, Khopoli, and Bhivpuri.
