Tribal takes ‘poison’, alleges harassment by forest department

Indore: A man allegedly consumed some poisonous substance during an encroachment removal drive on land he was farming in Khategaon range of Dewas forest on Friday. A video of the incident went viral. In the video, the man was seen alleging forest department of lodging false cases against him that forced him to take the extreme step.Forest department has registered 15-20 cases against me and have been harassing me from last 20 years, while I have won the (court) case of this land, the man, who was identified as tribal leader Ramdev Kakodiya, said in the video.Following the harassment, I am today consuming this (pesticide) and the entire department will be responsible for it, he said before consuming an alleged poisonous substance that was in a pesticide bottle and falling on agriculture fieldIn the video, nobody was seen stopping the man. But, as he consumed the substance, some people present on the field were seen attending him and were heard looking for availability of any vehicle to take him to the hospital.The forest staff, which was present at the spot in huge numbers, was however seen in the viral video remained impassive and refrained from rendering any help in rushing him to hospital for treatment.In the video, a JCB was also seen levelling the field that was prepared for farming by the victim and his family members.Dewas DFO Pradeep Mishra told TOI, Under the Wildlife Safety Week, we are carrying out demarcation of forest area and during this, the team found Ramdev Kakodiya knowingly or unknowingly taking possession over some additional land. The staff had reached the spot for demarcation of the land to inform him about how much is his land and how much land of forest is in his possession.SDO SL Yadav has reached hospital and took stock of the situation.
