MP second in the country in crimes against children

Indore: With 11,352 missing cases and 11,161 recovered cases of children below the age of 18 years in 2022, Madhya Pradesh stood at second position after West Bengal in crimes against children.From the first position in 2021, Madhya Pradesh dropped to second in 2022 with 20,415 cases, whereas Maharashtra, at the first spot, registered 20,762 cases. MP, however, witnessed an increase of 6% in the number of cases recorded in 2022 as compared to 2021.The state reported 109 cases of murders of children, 90 cases of abetment of suicide, 36 cases of attempted murder and 1751 cases of simple hurt.The state also recorded the second highest number of kidnapping and abduction of children (10,125) after Maharashtra (11571). Of these numbers, 5572 children who went missing were deemed as kidnapped.CID special DGP GP Singh said, While the statistics show that the situation of MP is in a bad shape, we have improved a lot as compared to 2021. Last year we had featured first on the list of crimes against children. In this category, there are standing instructions that cases should be registered immediately after preliminary investigations, and it should be assumed that crime was committed but in 75% cases it is observed that crimes were not committed.When old data was analysed, it was seen that almost 100% or in some cases 101% children (where the data from last year is added) were recovered, Singh said. The data reflects a sharp increase of 16.2% from 2020, a year marked by lockdown periods due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Kidnapping and abduction accounted for 46% of the crimes, followed by sexual offences under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (40%). The crime rate per lakh children was 36.6 in 2022, a marginal increase from 33.6 in 2021.Crime against senior citizens, children went up in Odisha 2022: NCRBCrimes against senior citizens and children increased in Odisha last year, according to the NCRB report. The number of cases involving crime against children rose by 4.3% to 8,240 in 2022. Offences against elderly people saw a significant increase to 551 cases, a rise of 162%. The crimes against seniors involved verbal abuse, criminal intimidation, murder, assault, rape, theft, and robbery. Despite arrests, no convictions were made. Measures have been taken by the police to ensure the safety of senior citizens and children, including senior citizen security cells and prioritizing Pocso cases.India records 51 cases of crime against women every hour; over 4.4 lakh cases in 2022: NCRB reportThe National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) released its annual crime report, revealing a concerning surge in crimes against women in India. In 2022, there were 4,45,256 cases of crime against women, an increase from previous years. The majority of crimes were categorized as cruelty by the husband or his relatives, followed by kidnapping, assault, and rape. Delhi had the highest crime rate, and Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of cases. While the rise in reported cases may be attributed to citizen-centric police initiatives, experts stress the need for a comprehensive investigation into the underlying factors.
