CyberCOP app to handhold Indore against cybercrime

Indore: Indore police on Tuesday launched a mobile application which aims at providing knowledge about cyber crimes being registered across the country. One can also register crimes using the options on the application which redirects the users to the concerned websites. Indore police commissioner Makrand Deoskar said that the application will empower individuals to access the latest information related to cybercrimes and online threats.The primary objective is to encourage every citizen to become a Cyber Cop themselves, staying informed and spreading awareness aboutcybercrime, he said. He emphasized that through this application, people can learn self-defense techniques against cybercrimes and take appropriate measures to safeguard themselves from online risks. The application aims to educate users on the ethical aspects of cybersecurity, providing essential knowledge about its significance and technical dimensions.Deoskar said that the application also enables people to report new cybercrimes, potentially assisting the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) in gathering valuable information. The application serves as a tool to raise awareness about cyberbullying, online fraud, bank fraud, fake news, and other related risks. It acts as a resource for women to enhance self-security and protect their rights through cyber awareness and education.The CyberCOP application has been developed with this vision in mind, encouraging everyone to utilize it, stay vigilant, and contribute to creating a safer digital environment for themselves and others, he said. This new scheme includes previous scholarship initiatives like e-Medhabruti, Vyasakabi Fakir Mohan Bhasabruti, and Gopabandhu Sikhya Sahayata Yojana (GSSY). Under this scheme, undergraduate and postgraduate students in Odisha pursuing general, technical, and professional courses can apply for scholarships. The e-Medhabruti scholarship provides financial aid of Rs 10,000 per annum for three years for UG students and Rs 15,000 per annum for two years for PG students. Technical and professional students receive Rs 20,000 per annum during the course duration. Other scholarships provided include Vyasakabi Fakir Mohan Bhasabruti and GSSY scholarships.Pendency of cybercrime cases high at 97% in courtsCybercrime cases in Mumbai increased by 64% in 2022 compared to the previous year, leading to a high pendency of cases in courts. Experts are calling for special cyber courts with trained lawyers and judges, as well as the establishment of a central Cyber police force under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report revealed that the main motives for cybercrimes in Mumbai were fraud and sexual exploitation. It is crucial to address these issues by making amendments to the Information Technology Act and ensuring timely adjudication of cybercrime cases.Chennai tops the list in cybercrime cases in stateChennai accounts for 21% of cybercrime cases in Tamil Nadu. The city and suburbs are experiencing a rise in cybercrimes, including scams involving WhatsApp display pictures. The 1930 helpline, which received 2,32,000 calls in the last 11 months, needs more staff to handle the increasing workload. To address this, the 1930 call centre will be upgraded and manned by qualified cyber professionals. Regular training on modus operandi and cyber security will be provided to call agents and police officers.
