Rain, cyclone drag down day temp 9 degrees below normal

Indore: The citys daytime temperature plummeted to 20 degrees Celsius — nine degrees below the seasonal normal — on Tuesday.This is the second time in this season when mercury dipped to 20 degrees Celsius mark during the day. Earlier, the city had recorded this temperature on November 27 following an intense spell of overnight rainfall on November 26.Minimum temperature, however, remained on the higher side with 17.5 degrees Celsius, which was five degrees above normal. The relative humidity in the early morning hours also remained high with 94% accompanied with shallow fog.This unexpected temperature shift has been attributed to cold air advection, spurred by rainfall in northern Madhya Pradesh, combined with the cloud cover generated by the ongoing cyclone Michaung. The convergence of cyclone Michaung and moisture from the Bay of Bengal is attributed for fog and clouds since Monday.The cold air advection due to rain in the Northern part of Madhya Pradesh is the reason for the sudden drop in temperature in Indore and nearby areas. The cloudy weather is attributed to cyclone Michaung. Night temperature is unlikely to fall before December 7. The weather will be similar for the next two days till the impact of the cyclone reduces, said senior meteorologist Dr. Ved Prakash Singh from the India Meteorological Department, Bhopal. Substantial temperature adjustments are likely to be observed only after December 7, post the cyclones diminishing effect, as per the Met department. The cyclone Michaung dumped more rain than the floods in 2015, with Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam observatories recording 53cm and 52cm of rain respectively. The highest rainfall was recorded in areas on the western and northern fringes of the city, such as Poonamallee, Avadi, and Kattupakkam. The storm remained stationary near Chennai for over eight hours, intensifying into a severe cyclonic storm and bringing heavy downpour. Eventually, the cyclone made landfall near Bapatla, around 375km from Chennai, on Tuesday afternoon.
