Panic grips IIT-K as cops comb hostels on terror alert

Kanpur: An unverified call, warning of terrorists hiding in the boys’ hostel of IIT-Kanpur on late Sunday night, prompted the police to launch a search operation. However, it turned out to be a hoax call, police said on Monday.Kalyanpur police, which was informed about the incident on Monday, told TOI that IIT-K security cell received an anonymous call at around 2 am. “The caller told the security personnel that two terrorists were hiding in hall no. 9 and 10 of the boys hostel of the institute,” said CO Kalyanpur Ajay Kumar.The security personnel immediately informed the senior institute officials, who in turn alerted the Kalyanpur police. The local police and a team of SWAT, with all preventive measures, immediately swung into action and launched an investigation in this regard.However, after a massive search operation, nothing suspicious was found in hall no. 9 and 10 of the hostel. The police said that the caller again made three calls on Monday at 7 am, 10 am and 12 noon. This time he threatened the security personnel that as to why they had informed the police about the midnight call. He identified himself with two different names — Sunil Yadav and Arvind Tiwari.According to CO Kalyanpur, it was a hoax call. A thorough search of the two halls of the boys hostel revealed nothing though there was brief panic reaction among the hostel inmates.“Police are making best possible efforts to trace the person who called the IIT-K’s security cell,” the CO further said.To recall, two back-to-back anonymous phone calls had been made from separate phone numbers warning to explode a bomb at Shanti Niketan Sweet shop in Kidwainagar on March 17.
