IIT-Kanpur unveils assistive tech to give braille literacy a boost

Kanpur/New Delhi: Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT- Kanpur) has unveiled an assistive technology aimed at giving a boost to braille literacy for visually impaired individuals. TheSingle Refreshable Braille Cell Based Braille Learning Device converts electronic text into Braille characters that can be read by touch and is expected to make a significant impact because of its affordability. The device serves as a powerful tool for beginners embarking on their journey to learn braille.Braille literacy rates have remained alarmingly low, with just about 1% of the population in India and 5-10% in developed countries having access to this essential skill according to reports. The device addresses this challenge by offering an affordable, self-learning solution that has a potential to transform the lives of countless visually impaired individuals. tnn
