1 fear drowned, four rescued while bathing in Ganga

Kanpur: A 19-year-old youth is fear drowned in river Ganga while four of his friends were rescued by the local divers present at the ghat, on Tuesday. The tragedy occurred while all five had gone to take bath in river Ganga in Maharajpur police station area of the district. Rescue operation to locate the whereabouts of the missing youth is underway. According to the information, Ajit (19), son of Deepak, resident of Ruma Deodhi Ghat, used to do painting work.On Tuesday, he had gone to take a bath in the Ganga with his friends, Manish (19) son of Chandrashekhar, resident of Ruma, Vikram (21) son of Virendra Singh, Arun Kumar (30) son of Ram Swaroop, Suraj Gaur (18) son of Premchand, Aman Singh (18) son of Ajay Singh, all residents of Shyamnagar, police station Chakeri. While bathing in Ganga, all five drowned after going into deep water. The incident occurred as a large number of pilgrims were visiting the beaches for Ganesh idol immersion. The marine police and district police had increased security along the coast due to the influx of devotees. The women were brought safely to shore and handed over to their relatives.Panicked woman, son rescued after counsellingTwo good Samaritans in Nagpur had to counsel and rescue a mother-son duo who were stranded in their ground floor room due to rising rainwater. Despite knowing how to swim, the son refused to leave his mothers side and they had to be convinced to jump into the water before being dragged to safety. The incident occurred at around 4.30am, and the rescue involved wading and swimming through fluctuating water levels.
