Night landing facility to come up at Kanpur Airport soon

Kanpur: Facility for aircraft to landing during night at Chakeri airport from November 2023. The ministry of defence, in letter dated October 10 to the president of the Merchant Chamber of Commerce, informed that necessary navigational aids to enable night landing, including Cat-II ILS, Runway lights, DVOR/DME and other infrastructure, were installed at the Kanpur airfield in March 2023. Operation of these navigational aids, however, is being handled by the IAF and the airport authority and is likely to be available for night landing by the end of November.Merchant Chamber of Commerce president Abhishek Singhania wrote to the ministries of civil aviation and defence urging them to take up the long-pending issue of night landing and had also asked the support of the state government. After various rounds of meetings and constant follow-ups, the authorities had given approval for the night landing facility at Kanpur Airport.Since Kanpur airport, also known as Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial airport, is under the ambit of Air Force and defence ministry, the latter was involved in the discussions too.Kanpur airport had established a new terminal this year and as demanded, ILS–II was installed for the use of night landing in the near future. The airport can accommodate three planes at a time and its lounge has a capacity of 300 passengers for the departure side and around 150 passengers for arrival and it is equipped with four conveyor belts.ILS was approved 13 years ago, but due to a technical snag, the instrument could not be installed at the Kanpur airport. According to airport official Sanjay Kumar, three IndiGo flights for Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore are operating from Kanpur. All flight movements are between 1.30 pm and 4 pm. Civil aviation ministry will finalise the date for night landing, he added.District magistrate Vishak G Iyer apprised that around 5,400 square metres of land had been demanded for a night landing facility. The land was identified and a proposal had been sent to civil aviation ministry and the land acquisition process is on, said the DM.Since the flight load is sizable, flights for Hyderabad and Kolkata are likely to resume in the next three months. The authority has stated that airport operators are not permitted to levy and collect unapproved charges, and passengers should not pay for them. AERA has directed airport operators to follow the practice of filing Multi Year Tariff Proposals before seeking necessary regulatory approval.
