Meet held to discuss release of convicts

Kanpur: Pradeep Kumar, IInd district judge Kanpur and president of District Legal Service Authority (DLSA) on Wednesday directed administrative authorities to initiate the proceedings for release of convicts who were eligible under the provisions of section 436 (A) Criminal Procedure Code (CPC), 1973.The district judge had convened a meeting of under trial review committee with administrative and jail officials. The meeting was convened in compliance of UP State Legal Service Authoritys direction issued under under trial review committee special campaign 2023.The jail superintendent presented a list of convicts who had suffered more than half of their sentence and apprised that some convicts are facing trials of serious offences pending in oher courts or punished with life sentences. After deliberations, the district judge directed to administrative officers to initiated the proceedings for the release of those convicts who were eligible as per provisions of section 436 A of CrPC.Shubhi GuptA, secretary, DLSA, stated that during the meeting, the issue of those who had been granted bail by the court but could not be released in the absence of sureties, was discussed and some directions were issued to the jail superintendent. The petitioner, lawyer Sadhana Yadav, had accused the police of inaction and refusal to register an FIR against the officer and his subordinates for assaulting her. The court noted that the FIR was recorded in English despite the official language of the state being Marathi.Judge caught texting during toddlers murder trial faces removal proceedingsA judge in Oklahoma, who was caught playing with her phone during a trial, is facing removal from the bench. The incident occurred while the judge was presiding over the trial of a murder suspect. She was caught on surveillance camera texting and making inappropriate comments about the case and the district attorney. The chief justice of the Oklahoma Supreme Court has recommended her removal, citing gross negligence of duty and lack of temperament. The judge has been temporarily suspended and is awaiting further proceedings.
