‘Serve notices to engrs for not taking action against road cutters’

Kanpur: Mayor Pramila Pandey has asked the municipal commissioner to issue notices to the engineers of zone 3 and 5 for not taking any action against road cutters.She was addressing a meeting of all zonal engineers here on Tuesday to discuss with them the road cutting issue.The mayor during the meeting observed that engineers of zone 3 and 5 have not issued notices to the departments or agencies concerned for illegal road cutting and slapping fines on them.She asked all zonal engineers to bring complete details of road cutting sanctioned by the KMC and the amount deposited in the KMCs treasury and action taken on extra road cutting.Engineer of zone 2 Diwakar Bhaskar said that KEM Industries had dug a 1.25 km long road without seeking permission. A notice of around Rs 2.5 crore as fine was being sent to the industry. The work agency in other cases had dug 6.951 km of road instead of sanctioned 6.473 km. A notice imposing a fine to the tune of Rs 4.35 lakh has been issued to the firm.Atul Pandey zonal engineer zone-3 stated that around 3.42 km of road had been cut against the sanctioned 6.09 km. The work agency had dug 2.50 metre pits instead of 10 metres. Assessment is being done about excessive pit cutting. Once the assessment is made, a notice would be sent to the agency. In zone-5 the work agency had dug 1286 pits against sanctioned 941 pits. The contractor will receive advertising rights for 15 years in exchange for developing and maintaining the road, with 25% of earnings going to the municipal corporation.Commute concern in school zones as bamboo barricades still block roadsAs schools and offices in Kolkata reopen, remnants of the Durga Puja festival, including bamboo barricades and structures, are still blocking city roads and pavements. Some schools, such as Don Bosco and DPS Ruby Park, are reopening on Monday, while others, like Calcutta Girls and Modern High School for Girls, will reopen later in the week. Parents and school authorities are concerned about the narrow road space and structures that are still blocking the way. Kolkata Police are conducting a route survey and asking organizers to remove the barricades and scaffoldings immediately.
