SC committee discusses measures to reduce road accidents

Kanpur: In a meeting related to road safety with district officials, Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre ( retd.), chairman, Supreme Court committee expressed grave concern on road accidentsand deaths in India directed that effective enforcement action must be taken in all road safety related cases including drunk driving, overspeeding, use of mobile phone while driving, overloading etc.He also directed officials to check driving licenses of drivers and mandate the use of helmets and seat belts while driving. More and more people should be made aware of the standards related to road safety.Earlier justice Sapre apprised that district Kanpur was on top in road accidents in the year 2022. India ranks first in the world in the number of deaths due to road accidents and Uttar Pradesh ranks first in the country. The car collided with a truck on the Moga-Amritsar highway due to foggy conditions. The bodies of the victims, who have not yet been identified, were taken to Moga civil hospital. Additionally, 719 accidents involved drivers with a learners license. One-third of road accidents in the state are caused by drivers without a license or drivers with or without a license involved in hit-and-run cases. Experts suggest imposing hefty fines for driving without a license and insurance, as well as providing better training and testing opportunities for drivers.Googles other maps app will tell you about roads which are accidents proneGoogles navigation app Waze is introducing a new feature that warns drivers of roads with a history of crashes. The app collects data from its community of users, recording the location of accidents and identifying high-risk roads. When a driver approaches a crash-prone road, Waze will display a pop-up notification with information on the number of crashes that have occurred in the past year. Google plans to use AI and reports from the Waze community to inform users about potential hazards on their routes. It is unclear whether this feature will be implemented in Google Maps as well.
