Kanpur: Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) named Azad constructing a tunnel on the upline of the Kanpur Central to Nayaganj stretch on the approximately 4.24 km long Kanpur Central-Transport Nagar underground section under the Corridor 1 (IIT-Kanpur to Naubasta) of the Kanpur Metro Rail Project achieved an important milestone on Wednesday with the commencement of its main drive (TBM undertakes two drives - first is initial and second is main drive). After a formal puja in the presence of senior officials of UPMRC, the main drive of the TBM machine commenced. Till now, after being launched from the launching shaft located at Kanpur Central, this TBM has completed the construction of a 75-meter (approx.) tunnel while moving towards Naya Ganj. Currently, construction work of about a 1250-meter-long tunnel is going on from Kanpur Central to Nayaganj on the Kanpur Central-Transport Nagar underground section. Under this, tunnelling is being done with the Azad TBM machine on the Upline, while there is a plan to launch another TBM on the Downline soon. This TBM has already been lowered inside the launching shaft at Kanpur Central station. Since its launch on the upline, the Azad TBM has completed approximately 75 meters of tunnel construction in its initial drive. On November 11, this TBM had completed its initial drive. After this, the TBM was stopped and the process of connecting it to the backup system unit had started. The backup system unit, approximately 95 meters long, was lowered into the approximately 18-meter-deep launching shaft and attached to the shield of the TBM. With the connection of the backup system unit, the process of tunnelling may now be done through the loco pilot in the main drive of the TBM. The backup system unit can also be called the control room of the TBM, where all the auxiliary systems of the machine are present. TBM works 24 hours a day through this backup system unit and engineers maintain the system in different shift. It is noteworthy that two TBM machines Nana and Tatya are already doing tunnel construction work on the approximately 4 km long Chunniganj-Nayaganj underground section. The tunnel construction on the stretch between Chunniganj to Nayaganj station in the said section has already been completed and now preparations are underway to launch the tunnel boring machine for the construction of the tunnel from the cut and cover shaft at MacRobertganj towards Chunniganj station.
