Ailing Asiatic lion Kesari dies at Etawah Safari

Kanpur: Asiatic lion Kesari, suffering from paralysis since the month of April, died late on Saturday evening. The three-year-old male was born in Etawah Safari itself to mother Jennifer and father Manan on April 15, 2020. Kesaris mother Jennifer had just died on November 10, while father Manan, suffering from skin cancer, had died on June 13, 2022.Kesari had been ill since April 25 this year.Earlier, a wound was found in his tail. It got cured after surgery by expert veterinarians. But, after that, the effect of paralysis was seen in his left leg. Since then, a team of expert veterinarians at Safari Park has been continuously treating and taking care of the feline.Besides, experts from institutions including Mathura Veterinary, and Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Bareilly, were also continuously giving advice regarding Kesaris health. After extensive consultations and in-depth discussions among experts, a surgery was performed on its hind leg. However, late Saturday evening, the big cat died. Safari director Atul Kant Shukla said that the carcass of Kesari, that died after attaining three years and seven months of age, has been sent to IVRI Bareilly for postmortem and for other tests. Kesaris treatment was being done by the safari doctors based on consultation with the wildlife medical experts of the country and the state. Kesaris health had been continuously deteriorating for the last few days. It was unable to even stand. Finally on Saturday evening, it collapsed, he said. Former chief minister and Samajwadi party president Akhilesh Yadav has demanded strict action against those responsible for Kesaris death on his X account. The real reason for the death of wild animals in Etawah Lion Safari in the past few months is the negligence of the administration and insensitivity of the management.
