Two arrested, 2 minors detained for poaching nine Siberian birds

Kanpur: Police have arrested two poachers and detained two minors in connection with a viral video which purportedly showed them carrying the migratory Siberian birds in the riverbed of the Ganga in Maharajpur area of the district on Sunday.The accused, identified as Vinod (28) and Rampal (45), have been booked under the Wildlife Protection Act and sent to jail, while two minors, who have been taken into custody, were produced before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB).We are now waiting for JJBs order for further action against them, said Maharajpur police inspector Abhishek Shukla, on Sunday.Wildlife officials identified the poached birds as bar-headed geese.Shukla said that some shocking facts came to fore during interrogation of the poachers.In the beginning, these people had caught three Siberian birds. Later, they blindfolded these birds and used them as decoys to catch six more migratory birds. According to locals, they caught around nine such birds in the past 4-5 days and sold them in the nearby markets for Rs 1000 a piece, the police inspector said.According to the police, the accused had been involved in the business of catching and selling Siberian birds for the last 10-12 years.We have also asked the forest department officials as to which species are the birds caught by the hunters in the viral video, the police inspector said.The poaching of migratory birds that fly from Siberia to wetlands in northern India to seek temporary shelter is a major cause of concern, said joint commissioner of police Anand Prakash Tiwari.Assistant commissioner of police (ACP), Chakeri, Santosh Kumar Singh said, Police on the basis of inputs from the accused are now zeroing in on other poachers involved in killing and selling Siberian birds.
