Cat bite deaths: Victims’ kin vaxxed & being monitored

Kanpur: The health department has swung into action following the death of a government basic school headmaster and his son Azeem due to rabies infection after they were bitten and scratched by their pet cat in Akbarpur town of Kanpur Dehat district. According to the district officials, the pet cat had been bitten by a stray dog, which was infected by rabies sometime in September.The health department said that members of the family who moved to Kanpur city, including basic school headmaster Imtiyaz Uddins wife and his daughter and a member of their family, have been traced and vaccinated against rabies and are being regularly monitored.During investigation, it came to fore that the cat had also bitten Imtiyaz Uddins wife Naushad Akhtar and their daughter Bushra. Bushra, her mother and a member of their family have been administered a rabies vaccine, and they are being continuously monitored, said chief medical officer Kanpur Dehat Dr AK Singh.The CMO said that according to the family members the cat had bitten Azeem at five different parts of his body and three different parts of Bushras body. Similarly, their parents including mother Naushad and father Imtiazuddin were also attacked by the cat. While Azeem died on Nov 25, his father succumbed on Nov 29, he said and added, We have written to the veterinary department to conduct a sterilization drive to control the increasing stray dog population. District veterinary department, meanwhile, has asked the people to get their pets which have attained three months of age vaccinated immediately. There is always a risk of rabies from unvaccinated animals.
