Kanpur Metro: 2 TBMs named Azad & Vidyarthi

Kanpur: The third and fourth Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), engaged in the task of tunnel construction work in the Kanpur Central-Transport Nagar underground section under the Corridor-1 (IIT-Naubasta) of the Kanpur Metro Rail Project, have been named Azad and Vidyarthi after the freedom fighters Chandrashekhar Azad and Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi. In this section, around 1,250-meter long tunnel is being constructed from Kanpur Central to Nayaganj. The third TBM Azad tunnelling on the Up-line has already completed its initial drive while the fourth TBM Vidyarthi has been lowered and preparations are underway to launch it soon for tunnelling on the downline. Expressing happiness on the occasion, managing director of Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (UPMRC) Sushil Kumar said, Under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, we are paying tribute to the brave martyrs of the country who sacrificed their lives for our independence. Considering such revolutionaries as inspiration, Kanpur Metro has decided to name its two new TBM machines as Azad and Vidyarthi. TBM machines constructing tunnel in Chunniganj-Nayaganj section were also named Nana and Tatya after the freedom fighters Nana Saheb Peshwa and Tatya Tope.
