Cops crackdown on cyber criminals

Our CorrespondentLudhiana December 7An initiative by the city police to track and trap cyber criminals through the use of information technology (IT) scientific techniques and forensic science seems to be paying dividends as many cases of cyber crime have been cracked by the police in the past few days. Claiming to have solved yet another case of cheating by a gang of cyber criminals the Commissioner of Police (CP) Rakesh Agrawal said eight members of a pan-India gang of cyber criminals had been busted by the police and coordinated efforts were being made with the police stations concerned and police heads of respective states to apprehend the criminals who had allegedly cheated city residents of Rs 6.42 lakh by posing as fake customer care executives of Airtel company. A city resident Manjit Singh a resident of Kakowal Road had lodged a complaint with the police that he had received a call on his mobile phone and the person speaking at the other end claimed that he was an executive of the customer care of Airtel. “The unsuspecting customer acted accordingly and after some time his mobile phone was shut down for 24 hours. In the intervening period the accused managed to get the password of the mobile banking of the victim changed and transferred a sum of Rs 642463 from his bank account” said the CP.

The victim was told that his SIM was to be converted into e-SIM and that he should send an SMS of the e-mail ID being provided to him on helpline number 121 and thereafter press certain number failing which his SIM card would be deactivated. “The unsuspecting customer acted accordingly and after some time his mobile phone was shut down for 24 hours. In the intervening period the accused managed to get the password of the mobile banking of the victim changed and transferred a sum of Rs 642463 from his bank account” said the CP. He said intensive investigation using cyber tracking techniques by the team of officials led by Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police/Investigation Rupindeer Kaur Bhatti and Assistant Commissioner of Police/Cyber Crime and Forensics led to the identification of eight members of the gang located in Delhi Noida Odisha Jharkhand Chhattisgarh Maharashtra Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. The accused persons he added booked under Sections 420/120-B IPC and Sections 66-C/66-D IT Act 2000 include Krishan Chander Swan a resident of Sardang in Odisha Nazban Nesha Bibi a resident of Jagatpur in Odisha Rahul a resident of Burai Wazeerabad Delhi Sai Prabha Neelawari Gaura a resident of Chaitanyanagar Ahmednagar in Maharashtra Biswajeet Sircar a resident of Balurghat Dinajpur in West Bengal Manchapi Kazi a resident of Dakshin Jagdishpur Bishnupur South 24 Pargana in West Bengal Gandhi Patro a resident of Radha Nagar Bokaro in Jharkhand Suman Sircar a resident of Baikunthpur Koriya in Chhattisgarh and Mohit Sharma a resident of Behlolpur Gatam Budha Nagar in Noida (Uttar Pradesh).
