Residents of low lying areas see ray of hope

Our CorrespondentMandi Ahmedgarh December 9Residents of low-lying localities of the town see a ray of hope as work on setting up of a sewage treatment plant (STP) has been started at the Dehliz disposal pond by the contractors. Fatehgarh Sahib MP Dr Amar Singh Boparai and Amargarh legislator Surjit Singh Dhiman had inaugurated the project recently while Sangrur Deputy Commissioner Ramvir and Ahmedgarh SDM Vikramjit Singh Panthey supervised the work. Acknowledging that residents of low-lying areas of the town had been suffering due to interruption of work on Maherna drain Dhiman said residents who had earlier opposed construction of the drain have now agreed to allow throwing of wastewater after treatment. Perennial ProblemThe problem of overflowing sewers had remained a challenge for the civic body for a long time. Rainy season and winters compound the problems of residents living in low-lying areas as they had to wade through stagnant cold and stinking water.

Fatehgarh Sahib MP Dr Amar Singh Boparai and Amargarh legislator Surjit Singh Dhiman had inaugurated the project recently while Sangrur Deputy Commissioner Ramvir and Ahmedgarh SDM Vikramjit Singh Panthey supervised the work. The plant estimated to be completed with a grant of Rs 8 crore is expected to start functioning after a year and would be capable to treat sewage disposal till the population rises to one lakh from 40000. Referring to the information received from engineers of the Acumen Consulting Engineers and Hi-Tech Water Solutions Private Limited Surat contractors executing the construction work Dr Boparai and Surjit Singh Dhiman informed that the projects would function on sequential batch reactor (SBR) process. The capacity of the plant was reported to be five million litres daily. “We have asked Deputy Commissioner Ramvir and SDM Vikramjit Singh Panthey to monitor the progress of the project as the department has already incurred undue delay in commencing work on the project” said Dr Boparai.
