Anti Sikh riots SIT records statements of victims family

Kuldip BhatiaLudhiana December 10In a significant development towards dispensation of justice to victims of anti-Sikh riots of 1984 a three-member special investigation team (SIT) of the Uttar Pradesh Police from Kanpur today visited the city and recorded the statements of family members and dependents of riot-victims in Kanpur who had later migrated to Ludhiana and other places in Punjab. Inspector SP Singh along with assistant sub-inspectors Sunil Kumar and Puneet Kumar recorded the statements of Tejinder Kaur and Harcharan Singh Channi who had lost their husband and brother respectively in the riots in Kanpur. The UP Police SIT team also met Surjit Singh president of 1984 Sikh Katle-Aam Welfare Society and women wing president of the body Bibi Gurdeep Kaur to have information about whereabouts or contact addresses of other victims of riots in Kanpur who might have settled in places other than Ludhiana. Surjit Singh told the visiting SIT team that information provided by some victims and their kin (of riots in Kanpur) had indicated towards involvement of the then Congress leaders including Anil Chandhel Santosh Mishra and Virender Singh Kushwaha. He said the UP government had formed the SIT to hold a probe in 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Kanpur on the directions of the Apex Court and those who had suffered at the hands of violent mob now held hopes that at last justice would be dispensed to them even though after a delay of 35 years.

In addition the SIT members also recorded statements of other migrants from Kanpur including Gudev Singh Inderpal Singh Vicky Daljit Singh Soni Manjit Singh Chawla Rajinder Singh Bhatia Gurdarshan Singh Satnam Singh and Harpreet Singh who provided vital inputs to the police team about involvement of certain prominent erstwhile Congress leaders who had allegedly incited the mob violence and also perpetrated in massacre of the Sikhs in Kanpur.
