Controversial wall in Santhaiyur slightly damaged

MADURAIThe controversial wall in Santhaiyur near Peraiyur here, which has been the cause of tension between two Scheduled Caste communities in the village for the past several months, was slightly damaged by unidentified persons on Thursday night. The Paraiyar community, who constructed the wall around a temple on poramboke land, has maintained that it was erected only to fence the temple. The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court has already directed the district administration to take action in accordance with law by saying that the wall was an encroachment on poramboke land. But the Arunthathiyar community has called it an ‘untouchability’ wall to prevent access to the land under common use. According to police sources, two rows of bricks were demolished partially on one side of the compound wall.

An official at the Peraiyur police station said that on hearing the noise, police personnel, who were on duty near the place, rushed to the spot, but the men managed to escape. A senior revenue official said that a case had been registered at the Peraiyur police station. The Paraiyar community, who constructed the wall around a temple on poramboke land, has maintained that it was erected only to fence the temple. But the Arunthathiyar community has called it an ‘untouchability’ wall to prevent access to the land under common use. Arunthathiyars have been camping outside the village for more than 50 days, demanding demolition of the wall. The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court has already directed the district administration to take action in accordance with law by saying that the wall was an encroachment on poramboke land.
