Tourists going to Manimuthar waterfalls and workers of Manjolai Tea Estate have a bone-rattling ride every day while using the narrow ghat road full of pot-holes, right from the Forest Department check-post. Since the road is under the control of Kalakkad-Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve as it traverses through the buffer zone of the tiger sanctuary, it has to give permission for re-laying the road. Sources in the KMTR said a proposal for re-laying the road had been forwarded to their higher-ups. The 20-km stretch between Manimuthar dam and Manjolai tea estate is being used by hundreds tourists going to the Manimuthar waterfalls in private vehicles and the Manjolai tea estate workers travelling in Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation buses to their workplace. Once the proposal was cleared, the road would be re-laid.

Since the road is under the control of Kalakkad-Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve as it traverses through the buffer zone of the tiger sanctuary, it has to give permission for re-laying the road. Though funds have been reportedly allocated for re-laying this road, delay in getting the mandatory permission from KMTR hampers the work.“The then Collector Sandeep Nanduri announced a few months ago that this battered stretch will be re-laid. Though funds were allocated for this scheme as announced by the Collector, the KMTR is yet to give the permission,” said a senior revenue official. Sources in the KMTR said a proposal for re-laying the road had been forwarded to their higher-ups. The approval was expected any time now. Once the proposal was cleared, the road would be re-laid.
