Syndicate nominee to VC search panel: two in fray

The other members in the VC Search Panel are Nageshwar Rao, VC of Indira Gandhi National Open University, who is the Governor-Chancellor’s nominee and M. Anandakrishnan, former VC of Anna University, who was chosen as the nominee of the Senate. N. Markandan, former VC of Gandhigram Rural Institute, and K. Meena, former VC of Bharatidasan University, were the two nominations. However, the authorities reportedly pointed out that Mr. Markandan had tendered resignation from the Planning Board before filing his nomination for contesting the election for Syndicate nominee. The two Syndicate members pointed out that Mr. Markandan was appointed as a member of the Planning Board of MKU, constituted in October 2017, during the tenure of P.P. Before the Madras High Court’s order, the three-member Search Committee had issued a notification inviting applications for the post of VC from interested persons.

The last date for withdrawal of nominations is October 4 and if there are more than one contestant in the fray, an election will be held on October 15. more-in Nominations of two persons have been accepted by Madurai Kamaraj University on Thursday for contesting the election to choose Syndicate’s nominee to the Vice-Chancellor search committee. N. Markandan, former VC of Gandhigram Rural Institute, and K. Meena, former VC of Bharatidasan University, were the two nominations. Though objection was raised against the nomination of Mr. Markandan by members of MKU’s Syndicate M. Ramakrishnan and S. Theenathayalan during the scrutiny on Thursday, the objections were not accepted by the university. The two Syndicate members pointed out that Mr. Markandan was appointed as a member of the Planning Board of MKU, constituted in October 2017, during the tenure of P.P. Chellathurai. Therefore, he was connected to the university. As per rules for contesting the elections, the candidate must be an eminent educationist not connected to MKU or other colleges and recognised institutions of MKU. However, the authorities reportedly pointed out that Mr. Markandan had tendered resignation from the Planning Board before filing his nomination for contesting the election for Syndicate nominee. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is October 4, 2018 and if there are more than one contestant in the fray at that time, an election will be held on October 15, 2018. The election was necessitated after the Madras High Court recently set aside the selection of C. Thangamuthu, former VC of Bharathidasan University, as the Syndicate’s nominee by citing that due process was not followed in the selection.
