Pallavi Baldev hosted and joined them for lunch during Gandhi Jayanthi celebration at Kottur near here on Wednesday. Time for camaraderie: Collector M. The district officers from various departments said that the workers would henceforth be called “Swachch Ambassadors” of Theni.

Pallavi Baldev hosted and joined them for lunch during Gandhi Jayanthi celebration at Kottur near here on Wednesday. Since she took over as Collector, Ms. Pallavi has been taking up various cleaning-up and environment-friendly measures. She conducted an anti-plastic campaign among college students, and involved self-help groups and office-goers in it. At the recent Saaral Vizha in Suruli Falls, youth, with the support of officials from Tourism department, distributed pamphlets highlighting the need to preserve Mother Earth. The students also educated the public on the health problems posed by smoking in public places, threat posed by use of mobile phones while driving and drunken driving. The Collector said the duty of keeping one’s surroundings clean and neat was not vested with officials alone. It was the duty of the people also. Theni district, with 130 panchayats, six municipalities and 22 town panchayats, produced about 200 tonnes of garbage. It must be minimised to prevent pollution. At the lunch, the conservancy workers were elated to have the Collector in their midst. Ms. Pallavi gave away prizes and gifts to the best conservancy workers for their Swachchta campaign.
