HC grants bail to two accused in Dalits’ murder

Justice G. Jayachandran granted bail to Prasanth and Ravi, who are facing trial in the case. The Dalits were hacked to death at Katchanatham by a group of caste Hindus in May following a clash over accepting temple honour. The trial is pending before the Special Court trying cases of atrocities against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in Sivaganga district. However, the names of the two accused did not feature in the FIR along with the 17 others. The court observed that the brutal attack on Dalits was unfortunate.

more-in MADURAI The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday granted bail to two accused in the case of murder of three Dalits at Katchanatham in Sivaganga district, and asked them to learn the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi by visiting Gandhi Memorial Museum in Madurai on the first Monday of the every month. Justice G. Jayachandran granted bail to Prasanth and Ravi, who are facing trial in the case. The court observed that the brutal attack on Dalits was unfortunate. However, the names of the two accused did not feature in the FIR along with the 17 others. The overt act attributed to the them was causing damage to roof tiles during the attack, the court said. With the investigation in the case already completed and the final report filed, balancing personal liberty and larger interest of society and also in order to bring normalcy in the region, the bail was granted for the two with conditions, the court said. The court directed them to execute a bond of ? 10,000 each and not to enter Katchanatham till the disposal of the trail. It also directed them to report to the curator of Gandhi Memorial Museum and spend the whole day learning the principles of Mahatma Gandhi. The trial is pending before the Special Court trying cases of atrocities against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in Sivaganga district.
