HC stays removal of advocates’ names from rolls

MADURAIThe Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday granted a stay against the removal of names of three advocates from the rolls of Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. It was alleged that the advocates and the law student from Dindigul were indulging in illegal activities, including conducting kangaroo courts, extortion and arm twisting innocent people. They were accused of taking possession of a property and putting up an advocate’s office by arm twisting the owner. However, appealing against the order, they claimed that a false case was foisted against them. They said that they were not given an opportunity to be heard in the case.

A Division Bench of Justices Pushpa Sathyanarayana and T. Krishnavalli granted the stay after advocates S. R. Balasubramanian, S. Saravanakumar and V. Subramani and law student Vetri Selvan appealed against a single bench order which had directed the removal of their names from the rolls of the Bar Council and said that the law student need not be enrolled until further orders. It was alleged that the advocates and the law student from Dindigul were indulging in illegal activities, including conducting kangaroo courts, extortion and arm twisting innocent people. They were accused of taking possession of a property and putting up an advocate’s office by arm twisting the owner. However, appealing against the order, they claimed that a false case was foisted against them. They said that they were not given an opportunity to be heard in the case. They further added that had notices been served on them they would have either appeared in person or through their counsel to give their version of the incident.
