more-in Muslims from 25 jamaths under the banner of Thoothukudi Integrated Muslim Federation staged a protest on the premises of Collectorate here on Monday against the killing of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar. They carried placards with images revealing killings of several people, including infants, children and adults, lying dead on ground and several others wounded. They sought the intervention of countries to prevent such killings. They condemned the Myanmar government. M. Mujibur Rehman, district secretary, Jamathul Ulama Sabai, who led the protest, cited the cruelty of the Myanmar military behind such mass killings and demanded the Indian parliament to adopt a resolution condemning the Myanmar government. More importantly, the United Nations Security Council should impose economic sanctions on Myanmar, they said. He said the government should refrain from sending back any Rohingya Muslim refugees on arrival to India. Since such victims suffered several hardships and faced humiliation often by the Myanmar government, most of them had been leaving Myanmar and moving to India and other countries. To safeguard the Rohingya refugees, he urged the government to establish rehabilitation centres and they should be accommodated until the crisis situation ended. A petition citing these demands was submitted to Collector N. Venkatesh, he said.
