Tourism dept’s social media pitch to woo tourists for Dasara

Mysuru: Tourism authorities in Mysuru have planned to reach out to visitors across the globe to woo them to visit the city during Dasara celebrations. With Unesco recognising Somnathapura temple, near Mysuru, as a World Heritage Site, authorities are planning to use the platform to promote and introduce the site to global visitors. Also, infrastructure at the site would be upgraded to aid tourists visiting the site.MK Savitha, joint director of the tourism department, said that Karnataka tourism authorities would use social media to inform tourists worldwide about the festival dates and programmes. Since social media is a powerful medium, various promotional activities, including videos of places and programmes of Dasara and posters would be uploaded regularly, Savitha said.Authorities are also planning to use the Somnathapura temple as one of the themes during the celebration given its world recognition.Officers are concerned over the scale of the celebration owing to the drought-like situation in the state due to the lack of rain this monsoon season and the unfolding Cauvery crisis. But, tourism stakeholders are pressing for the traditional celebrations as this is the season of business for the sector.Hoteliers and travel agents expressed concern over poor infrastructure at various sites, especially over the lack of clean restrooms and drinking water, and have appealed to us to take the initiative.Savitha said that stakeholders suggested improving basic facilities at tourists places, including motorable roads, restrooms, and safety measures, and to take measures to conduct tourism-related activities in the city after dusk so that tourists stay back overnight.Tourism circuit routeAt a stakeholders meeting organised by the tourism department here on Thursday, hoteliers and travel agents suggested drawing a tourism circuit route and starting a separate webpage to promote tourism in Mysuru. However, stakeholders are calling for dedicated plans to promote tourism in the region and improve connectivity between the historical sites. The UNESCO recognition is likely to generate public interest and encourage visits to these sites. Authorities are hopeful that the government will develop a tourism circuit in the region to enhance promotion, connectivity, and facilities.No response to caravan tourism in coastal districtsThe proposal for caravan tourism in coastal districts of Karnataka has received a poor response from stakeholders. While there is interest in the concept, stakeholders believe that the state government needs to provide facilities and infrastructure for caravan tourism to thrive. The proposal includes creating caravan parks near beach sides, with amenities such as electricity, washrooms, and sewerage outlets. Despite the lack of interest so far, the idea will be proposed again after the completion of the Blue Flag beach project.
