NAGPUR: Expressing concern over deteriorating healthcare situation in Maharashtra, the combined opposition staged a walkout from the assembly on Wednesday during the question hour.Seeking resignation of health minister Tanaji Sawant for his failure to handle the situation, the opposition members led by leader Vijay Wadettiwar shouted anti-government slogans and condemned it for deaths of young women in Buldhana and Gadchiroli. Both sides are raising concern over deaths of women, including from tribal areas, due to lack of necessary facilities, particularly in Vidarbha. The ministers claim for constituting a probe is farce, Wadettiwar said.In a rare instance, both the treasury and opposition benches launched a scathing attack on the state health department for failure to provide healthcare facilities in the rural and tier-III cities that was leading to deaths. The members from both sides were speaking on the query regarding death of three pregnant women in absence of facilities in Vidarbha. The query by MLA Sunil Kedar, Yogesh Sagar, Subhash Dhote and others pointed out about deaths of Rajani Shedmake (23) and Ujjwala Bure (27) from Gadchiroli on September 20 after their caesarean operation. The legislators also brought to fore how Vidya Gawande (21) was made to travel from Buldhanas civil hospital to Akolas Government Medical College and Hospital and ultimately to GMCH in Nagpur after she was found to be suffering from dengue. She, however, died during transit from Akola to Nagpur. The members from both sides sought answers from the minister on whether the Mahayuti government would take action against the responsible doctors and officials for negligence that led to deaths of the innocent women. The members from both sides expressed concern over lack of even the basic medical facilities in the remote areas that was leading to the deaths of many citizens. Even as speaker Rahul Narwekar directed the government to institute a probe under assistant civil surgeon into the three deaths, which was agreed by Sawant, the opposition members walked out of the house demanding stringent action against the concerned doctors and other officials.
